A year after the accidental death of their father, three drug-addicted brothers — each suffering from depression – meet for a train trip across India. Francis, the eldest, has organized it. The brothers argue, sulk, resent each other, and fight. The youngest, Jack, estranged from his girlfriend, is attracted to one of the train’s attendants. Peter has left his pregnant wife at home, and he buys a venomous snake. After a few days, Francis discloses their surprising and disconcerting destination. Amid foreign surroundings, can the brothers sort out their differences? A funeral, a meditation, a hilltop ritual, and the Bengal Lancer figure in the reconciliation.

Film Review

The Darjeeling Limited is a landmark piece of work for director Wes Anderson. It is perhaps his most mature effort, it is his one of most beauty, and it is remarkably imaginative and gives its characters a place in the story. His last effort, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, was a gentle journey, but made its environment and imagery so overscale compared to its characters. Here, there is a much more human approach to its subject, and to top it off, likable characters. If you think back, we haven't always been greeted with the kindest of chaps in Anderson's past filmography. In Bottle Rocket, we dealt with three nitwits who had some charm, but inevitably, some unusual perks to them. In Rushmore, we had the most unlikable of them all; an overconfident, narcissistic schemer who would consistently try and manipulate the system to get his way. It wasn't until The Royal Tenenbaums that Anderson started to seemingly care about his characters, and we did too.The same happens …

The first half of this is strong, because of the devices that control it and which Wes Anderson adeptly executes. One is the consciousness of story folding and unfolding, where coincidence is a cosmic joke (such as when Bill Murray in the beginning ostensibly misses the train of the movie) and the narrative is experienced by the characters as the capricious whims of a higher decree. When the train for example has to make a stop in the middle of the desert to orientate (itself the source of metaphorical amusement) and Owen Wilson is told that "they need to locate themselves", Anderson quickly points out the obvious symbolism. Here, perhaps more profoundly than anywhere else in the movie, I feel the hand of the director as the hand of god. The more the characters try to effect control over their lives, the more he wrestles it away and tosses them around. Owen Wilson's onanistic desire for a spiritual journey Wes Anderson denies or taunts, incorporating instead the sought af…

Three grown men act like teenagers for two hours without any real gags to make it bearable. This film really needed more to it. While you get high production values, some nice cameos – the staff on the train were great, I felt this was not enough to make it worthwhile. The viewer needs to be able to identify with these characters and the three brothers here were either non-communicative, childish or boring. I loved the silly pomposity of the characters Anderson portrays in the Royal Tennebaums and Aquatic Life, partly as the setting was so surreal and comic, but this is just a train ride with three boring people going nowhere. There is a glimpse of redemption at the end (which would be giving away too much of the plot to reveal), but the emotional impact of the events is not discussed by the characters or properly explored by the director. The brothers just appear mute and carry on taking cough medicine to get high. A comedy about westerners in India is an interesting premise, but thi…
