Film Review

The Roman Catholic Church is mourning the sudden death of the Pope. While there is mourning happening at the Vatican City, it is also preparing for the papal conclave which will elect on who will be the next Pope. Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) assumes the temporary control of the Vatican while thousands have been pouring into Saint Peter's Square, waiting for the vote.Meanwhile at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), Father Silvano Bentivoglio (Carmen Argenziano) and their colleagues are initiating the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and create in three vials, suspended antimatter particles bigger than any that have been detected before. Loved the first movie, I got right into it; this one I didn't.To save the day our heroes have to follow a trail of statues around Vatican City. They go from one to the next with no real mystery or devious puzzle solving they simply have to look up the architect in an old book.It is very much like one of those tedious computer adventure games where you have to collect a tea pot to defeat a troll, to get a key that opens a window so you can collect a frying pan… etc. Except you have to watch Tom Hanks play it… for two hours! Where National Treasure and Indian Jones have great locations and you feel like you are on an adventure, this is firmly planted in the Vatican at night. Which the film has you believe is entirely populated with statues and angry Italians.Production is of course top notch. Not terrible just very dull.

I don't expect much of a Ron Howard film. His films are bloodless and unappealing to me, despite the effects that are applied. His cinematic ideas are as basic and uninteresting as those annoying camera effects we have in his Dan Brown based films – cameras that move through walls as if to show us the "hidden truth" behind what's apparent. Dull. The biggest disaster was the "daVinci Code", because that was made when the book was incredibly consensual throughout the world, consensual even in its supposed revolutionary revelations. The film was so poor it couldn't even serve as a proper illustration for the book like, say, the Harry Potter films do with the books. This one was a predictable failure. If they weren't able to break any rules of the genre with the first one that was already loved by the public before it was even shot, this wouldn't be where they'd make it. This had to maintain the viewers that kept following Langdon even afte…
